Approximately 10 people are working at the R&D department of Winclove, each within his or her own field of expertise. This guarantees that our R&D is working in a broad research field from product development and laboratory analyses to technical applications and clinical trials. Our R&D has great expertise and knowledge on every aspect related to probiotics and the management of the intestinal microbiota.

Our R&D is working on:
Product Development
Our probiotics are based on a scientific background, including literature and (in vitro) research on a large amount (>100) of probiotic strains. Probiotic strains are extensively screened and only strains with relevant probiotic characteristics are selected for specific probiotic formulations. Besides research on the probiotic strains, we are continuously working on the maintenance and improvement of stability and activity of our probiotic formulations.
Research Projects
We are cooperating in several large research projects, together with different research partners but also with commercial partners. These projects are mainly focused on more fundamental and/or mechanistic research. We are interested in the management of the intestinal microbiota, the effect of probiotics on it, and the importance of this in human (and animal) health. Our partners do not only have expertise in microbiology, but also in immunology, gastro-enterology and systems-biology.
In vitro studies
We have our own laboratory where, besides quality analyses on our products, in vitro experiments can be performed. In addition, we perform a lot of in vitro experiments in cooperation with several research partners, because of their expertise in for instance immunology or gut integrity. In vitro experiments are performed on both the individual strains and final products and is an important factor is the process of product development.
Examples are:
- survival through the gastro-intestinal tract: the survival of the gastro-intestinal tract is measured in a model developed with the University hospital of Maastricht which is described in a publication of Timmerman et al.
- inhibition of specific pathogenic bacteria
- influence on cytokine production or other immune parameters
- production of metabolites (e.g. lactic acid), etc.
Clinical trials
Winclove is and has been involved in several clinical trials, both open pilot studies as well as double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized studies. These studies are performed in cooperation with several research partners, mainly academic hospitals, in the Netherlands, but also elsewhere in Europe. These trials are performed to support the efficacy of our products, especially for the products that are designed for their use in a specific application.
Examples are studies on the:
- prevention of allergy; Probiotics AND Allergy (PANDA) study in cooperation with the Wilhelmina Children's Hospital and Wageningen University.
- prevention of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea; in cooperation with the Unversity hospital Maastricht.
- extension of the remission time in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis); in cooperation with University hospital Maastricht and University hospital Linkoping.
- reduction of symptoms in constipation: in cooperation with the University hospital Amsterdam.
