Promotion Catherina Koning on Ecologic® AAD and antibiotics-associated side effects

It is generally konwn that antibiotic use can cause a disturbance of the intestinal microbiota. Now, Catherina Koning from the Universtiy of Maastricht, has shown that one week's usage of antibiotic can cause disturbances for more than nine week's of the intestinal microbiota, and also causes diarrhea. She has also shown that a mix of probiotic strains, called Ecologic AAD, is able to help restore these antibiotic-induced disturbances.

PRESS RELEASE 03-02-10: Winclove withdraws all health claims applications

Winclove in Amsterdam, worldwide producer of Probiotics feels forced to withdraw all applications for health claims.

The reason for this is:

1. At the time of application, in 2007, the procedure and the requirements on requested information were very unclear;

2. In 2008, EFSA requested additional information, without further clarifying of the procedure and requirements;

3. It was only in 2009, after the rejection of several health claims, that slowly became clear what requirements were demanded by EFSA

4. In the meantime EFSA did not react on the letters that we’ve sent them for clarification, and we had to find one of our applications rejected by EFSA

The one claim being put down had considerable negative impact on our image in the market and the consequence of this goes entirely for our account. As some applications have been made on the trade names of our customers, we feel obliged to protect them by withdrawing all our applications. We will consider to re-launch our applications as soon as the procedure has become transparent.

Winclove produces designer probiotics as food supplements, targeted for several health issues. These products are sold in 35 countries in the private label market for medical endorsed applications.

Donderdag 17 december heeft de IGZ haar eindrapport gepubliceerd van de zgn Propatria pancreatitis trial met Ecologic 641. De directie van Winclove wil daar als volgt op reageren:

• Wij betreuren de uitkomst van het Utrechtse onderzoek
• Hebben vertrouwen in kundigheid en integriteit van de onderzoekers
• We hebben vanaf het begin van het gehele project en de start van het onderzoek, de grootst mogelijke openheid bepleit;
• We  zijn verheugd dat het IGZ rapport er eindelijk is;
• Wij zijn gerustgesteld door het feit dat de IGZ geen relatie legt tussen de kwaliteit van het product en het  feit dat er patiënten overleden zijn.
• Wij zijn blij met de uitspraak van de IGZ over de integriteit van de onderzoekers
• Het rapport stelt echter teleur omdat er geen werkelijk onderzoek is gedaan naar wat er klinisch medisch is   gebeurd. Daar was in de afgelopen twee jaar genoeg tijd voor
• De IGZ beperkt zich tot een onderzoek naar het antwoord op de vraag of de trial is uitgevoerd volgens het   goedgekeurde studie-protocol en de geldende wet- en regelgeving;
• Wij hebben echter behoefte aan een diepgaande analyse van wat er werkelijk gebeurd is, zodat in toekomstig   onderzoek de risico´s beter beheerst kunnen worden;
• Ook vinden wij het van belang dat de Inspectie zich uitspreekt over de risico´s die bepaalde groepen   patiënten lopen. De onderzoekers hebben daar in hun artikel een uitspraak over gedaan. Wij denken dat de   Inspectie hier ook een standpunt over zou moeten innemen;
• In het rapport doet de IGZ aanbevelingen die ook voor ons van belang zijn en die wij ter harte zullen nemen;
• Wij hebben inmiddels intern maatregelen genomen en procedures aangescherpt
